Skyhawk and The Endangered Wildlife Trust Store

 The Endangered Wildlife Trust Store

We were proud to be involved in the highly anticipated launch of the new Endangered Wildlife Trust Store at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town recently.

The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) is dedicated to conserving threatened species and ecosystems in Southern Africa including the critically endangered Dugong, African Wild Dog, Blue Swallow and Riverine Rabbit and is a champion in the battle currently being fought against Rhino poaching.

The Store creates a much needed retail outlet for The Trust and allows for interesting partnerships, fundraising opportunities and for awareness raising. Proceeds from the sale of all items in the store go to supporting a list of endangered wildlife in Southern Africa and their habitats.

Skyhawk was thrilled to partner yet again with The Endangered Wildlife Trust by making available  a range of signed fine art prints and a limited edition range of Mozambique postcards at the store.

A Flock of Stingray

We were recently on assignment in the Bazaruto Archipelago Marine Reserve in Mozambique when we came across this unique sighting of a flock of Stingray "flying" in close formation through the ocean shallows.

It was absolutely incredible to watch these gentle giants gliding effortlessly through the water.

I have included some images of the archipelago just to put into perspective the phenominal beauty of the habitat of these graceful creatures

Skyhawk awarded Nature's Best Picture of the Week 2011

Photographers from all around the world are invited to sumbit images for the review of Nature's Best Photography and each week one image is featured on the homepage. This year Skyhawk Photography won Picture of the Week 2011 for their image of Sandwich harbour

The Story: The stretch of dramatic coastline between Henties Bay and Sandwich Harbour must be hands-down one of the most magnificent flights in the world. On this particular afternoon, as we flew down the coast from henties Bay, it was a scorching 95 degrees Farenheit on the ground - and astonishingly, the temprature didnt change 2000 feet up! Sandwich Harbour is staggeringly beautiful and so isolated it has a sacred stillness to it. This protected RAMSAR site is a wetalnd of international importance. Host to nearly 70, 000 birds each year, including flamingos, pelicans and terns - it is truly one of nature's miracles.

Skyhawk and Endangered Wildlife Trust Partnership

THE EMERGENCY DUGONG PROTECTION PROJECT - BAZARUTO ARCHIPELAGO, MOZAMBIQUE

The Bazaruto Archipelago is heavily utilized for it’s marine resources, and tourism value, yet still manages to support the Western Indian Ocean’s last viable population of Dugongs. The Dugong is a near mythical marine mammal that once ranged Africa’s eastern coastline from Eritrea through to southern Mozambique. Today, as a result of by-catch, the Dugong is extinct in much of its range, and is expected to vanish from Africa within the next 40 years.

The elusive Dugong occurs in shallow tropical and subtropical coastal and island waters of the Indo-pacific. These herbivores are seagrass specialists consuming 10% of their body mass in leafy vegetation each day. A mature adult can weigh up to 400kg, attain 3,5m and reach an age of 70. These gentle grazers are only able to produce 1 calf every 5 to 7 years after reaching maturity at 16 years. Not only are Dugongs at risk from drowning in gill nets throughout the Bazaruto Archipelago, their habitat is under threat from seine netting destruction.

The Dugong’s struggle to endure here is a perilous one, and one that requires urgent conservation attention. This is being applied through the Dugong Emergency Protection Project managed by the Endangered Wildlife Trust. The Project is implementing a range of conservation interventions that will secure core Dugong herds and habitat.

Skyhawk has partnered with the Endangered Wildlife Trust  in the Bazaruto Archipelago in attempt to provide sustainable income for the Dugong Emergency Protection Project through the sale of various Skyhawk fine art products.

If you would like to support the EWT and the creatures of the Archipelago consider buying a breathtaking set of 11 limited edition postcards

The postcards feature unique aerial images of the Bazaruto Archipelago and the Mozambique coastline; habitat to the last remaining viable population of Dugong on the East African coastline; one of the worlds most endangered marine mammals.

Proceeds go directly to the project to set up crucial monitoring and infrastructure networks in the reserve and much needed educational programs.

A set of full colour extra large postcards costs R335 including postage (within South Africa)
